Michael Beale, when he replaced Giovanni van Bronckhorst as Rangers manager, seemed like the obvious choice, however, Peter Bosz would have been a braver one.
The former Ajax, Bayer Leverkusen and Lyon boss has beaten Rangers on three occasions as manager and would have been an experienced pair of hands to replace his fellow Dutchman.
The Rangers board went another direction, even though Peter Bosz was out of work and available, but it now appears as if he won’t be jobless for long.
Football Oranje and AFC Ajax with a near 650k combined followers on Twitter, have both suggested that Bosz is to return to the scene of his, almost, greatest triumph.
Bosz was in charge when Ajax reached the final of the Europa League in 2016/17 with a team that was yet to develop fully into the one that would be pillaged by some of European football’s heavyweights.
A career that might be short in silverware is one that has seen him earn praise for his approach to the game.
Rangers fans know only too well what sort of style Bosz has from the two chasings against Leverkusen and the one-sided home defeat against Lyon in the 2021 Europa League.
Bosz was, reportedly, a serious contender for the Rangers job last winter and there is one big difference between him and Michael Beale – clout.
For want of a better phrase.
Bosz has managed in the Eredivisie, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1, he also worked at Feyenoord as a director of football.
His knowledge of European football will be as good as anyone’s.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing but, with a summer rebuild on the cards and no sporting director, Rangers might have been better served putting their trust in someone who has been there before.
After all, if he is good enough for the Ajax job, surely he would have been good enough for Rangers?
