Rangers boss Michael Beale has praised the early link-up between Todd Cantwell and Malik Tillman in the win over St Johnstone – and hinted at an exciting on-field partnership at Ibrox.

The Gers confirmed a move for 24-year-old Norwich City midfielder Cantwell during the week with Rangers the destination as the once highly-rated player aims to resurrect his career.

After breaking through with the Canaries, Cantwell impressed in the Premier League and was even once rated at £50m, whilst there were links to the top teams in England.

But the last few seasons have seen a downturn in form for the player who is looking for a fresh start and was thrown straight in for Rangers’ eventual 2-0 victory over St Johnstone.

Impressing in flashes, Michael Beale praised Todd Cantwell after the game and even pointed to a potential exciting link-up with Bayern Munich loanee Malik Tillman.

“He was free to go and disrupt and get touches in the ball,” said Beale [Rangers].

“That’s how he’ll play for us, similar to Ryan Kent, they’re allowed to go break the rules if you like.

“We’ve got quite a lot of structure in terms of our midfielders, so I like those two being quite free. I thought Malik joined it at times as well and some of the approach play first half was very good.

“I thought Malik (Tillman) and Todd (Cantwell) at times in the first half some of their play was fantastic, they just didn’t reward it with a goal.”

The prospect of former Premier League talent Todd Cantwell linking up with USA international Malik Tillman is an exciting one for Rangers fans.

Both are vibrant and positive attacking young players and if the club can get them clicking then they will be handful for opposition players at home and abroad.

Todd Cantwell hails Rangers debut

Todd Cantwell also spoke to RangersTV after the win over St Johnstone and expressed his delight at walking out at Ibrox for the first time.

Describing the moment as giving him “goosebumps”, let’s hope it’s the start of something special with the midfielder at the club.

“It was goosebumps, I walked out and I thought I would have it all under control, but it’s something that I’ll hold for a very long time and hopefully for my whole life,” said Todd Cantwell.

“It was wonderful to be out there and on the pitch. The three points are the most important thing. I haven’t played since November and today was a little bit a case of blowing off the cobwebs.

“I loved it and I can see myself doing well and I’m looking forward of showing the best version of me.”

Meanwhile, Rangers have also been handed a major Ianis Hagi boost heading into the League Cup Final.
