Kent replacement fails to deliver for Rangers on day one

Rangers have invested heavily in the forward line this summer, however, it matters little how much a manager spends if a player like Sam Lammers isn’t given the opportunity to make the most of their talents.

The reported £3.5m signing from Serie A might not have been the marquee arrival of the window but his role in Michael Beale’s team is arguably the most important.

Tasked with replacing Ryan Kent as Rangers key playmaker, Sam Lammers debut against Kilmarnock is one that won’t be remembered for long when you look at the Sofascore statistics.

Rangers need more from Sam Lammers

Before being replaced in the 84th minute, the big Dutchman did little to inspire a team struggling for inspiration.

A team that, due to the inept tactics, meant that individual brilliance was going to be required to break Kilmarnock down.

With one shot, 18 accurate passes and zero key passes, Rangers talisman was posted missing when he was needed most.

His ability in 1v1 situations saw him come out as one of Rangers most impressive pre-season performers and yet Sam Lammers managed to beat his marker just two times.

It wasn’t all on the 26-year old though.

That he only had 39 touches all game says it all about the service he was getting.

Every signing has said that they understand how big a club Rangers is and the pressure of having to win every week.

But understanding and taking responsibility are two entirely different issues.

Whether he likes it or not, Rangers have given Sam Lammers the key to our success and, poor tactics or not, it’s up to him to unlock opposition defences, regardless of how much help he gets from teammates.
