With competition involving the goalkeeper position fierce at Rangers, an Ibrox relation will be settling into Jon McLaughlin.
Yet to make an appearance for the side it’s season, Jon McLaughlin is currently behind both form goalkeeper Jack Butland and deputy Robby McCrorie.
Unless this is to change in the coming weeks then we suspect that the ex-Scotland international stopper has already played his final game for Rangers.
Jon McLaughlin missed Rangers chance
Out of contract at the end of this season, Jon McLaughlin hasn’t played for Rangers since April when the goalkeeper played in the 2-1 win over Ross County.
This was one of 16 appearances for the club last season, with the ex-Hearts and Sunderland stopper initially taking the number one jersey from Allan McGregor.
Yes, last season Rangers and ex-manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst opted to put their trust in Jon McLaughlin and it’s a decision which wound up costing the club in the end.
Jon McLaughlin had a day to forget in a 4-0 drubbing at Celtic Park before going to Amsterdam and shipping the same number of goals v Ajax.
Since then Jon McLaughlin has struggled to get into the Ibrox side and – given he’s also not been selected for the Europa League – the goalkeeper’s days look numbered.
Gers well stocked in goalkeeper position
The signing of ex-England international Jack Butland in the summer has been a revelation for Rangers.
The ex-Crystal Palace and Manchester United goalkeeper is an option of the highest quality and he’s taken to Rangers as quickly as the club has taken to him.
In Robby McCrorie, Rangers also have a very capable back-up in the squad as the future Scotland number one pushes Butland all the way between the sticks.
But with Scotland boss Steve Clarke urging Robby McCrorie to move on, Jon McLaughlin might be restored as back up should this come to fruition.
It’s the stopper’s only hope of a return to the Rangers side, with the 36-year-old almost certainly exit-bound when his contract expires in the summer.
Having joined Rangers in 2020, Jon McLaughlin played a key role in the club winning 55 and has made 46 appearances, keeping 29 clean sheets.
