How Robbie Fraser could save Rangers millions after Patrick Stewart rebuild demand

For Rangers, 2024 can be classed as ground zero in what is hopefully the sort of reset that builds the foundations for a successful future.

Philippe Clement is the manager for now, however, unlike his predecessors, he won’t be calling the shots or responsible for rebuilding the squad on his own.

Instead, as detailed by Patrick Stewart in his lengthy interview, Rangers are heading in a new direction that means Clement and those who follow him will have to work smarter.

How Robbie Fraser could save Rangers millions

What this should mean is that academy graduates like Robbie Fraser get more of a chance to shine.

The 21-year old enjoyed a stunning first start for Livingston, scoring one goal and playing a key role in another on his way to a man of the match performance.

It was an encouraging display from the B team skipper who Clement didn’t want to let go, but a run of games is exactly what he needs and it could save Rangers millions.

With Jefte improving week, by week and Ridvan Yilmaz linked with a return to Turkey, there is an obvious decision to make.

If Fraser can prove that he can be consistent in the Championship, there is no reason why he shouldn’t be promoted and become the first choice back-up or rotation option at left-back.

How Rangers have opened the door for Fraser to get his chance

CEO Stewart has already hinted that change is underway and that a specific type of player is being targeted:

“Firstly, younger players who have the mentality to play for Rangers and who fit within our financial parameters,” Stewart said of the squad rebuild.

“And then we have a first-team management group that develops those players so that they’re contributing minutes on the pitch immediately and they’re also increasing in value on the transfer market.

“If you look at this summer I think there are some really good examples of that profile of player. We’ve got Hamza, we’ve got Jefte and Bajrami. They’re good examples of that profile of player.”

Signing the ‘best of the rest’ like Lyall Cameron should always be an aim, but the cheapest method of squad building is always promoting from within.

It’s early days, but Fraser has shown that he might just save the club he loves a pound or two.
