Faint praise for Rangers who need to stop shooting themselves in the foot against Celtic

Glorious failure is not, never has been, and never will be in Rangers vernacular with Philippe Clement determined to turn his team into winners.

The manager has his work cut out with several problems in his squad still to be solved.

If he is to avenge the defeat to Celtic, it isn’t just the officiating that needs to improve, there is something that Clement can take responsibility for too.

The self-inflicted problems Rangers can fix

Rangers were unlucky in the Premier Sports Cup final, the game became a lottery when it went to penalties with the coin toss not landing in their favour.

However, in the last two derbies, Rangers would have had to score four goals to win each game in normal time which suggests that there is a problem at the other end of the park.

Every goal that Celtic scored at Hampden carried a degree of luck.

The first saw a tame, sclaffed effort diverted past Jack Butland by Nicolas Raskin.

The second was a defensive mistake by Leon Balogun compounded by Daizen Maeda miss-controlling the ball but seeing it land perfectly for him to slot past Butland.

And the third saw an attempted interception take out two Rangers players before Nicholas Khun got away with fouling Mohamed Diomande in the build-up

What can Clement do about defensive gaffes?

For each of these goals Rangers could, and should have done better.

A corner was only half cleared, Maeda should never have been allowed to get to the ball before Balogun and Diomande should have played to the whistle – even if he was fouled.

It was exactly the same in the first league game between the two sides at Parkhead too.

Clement can have the perfect game plan, but if Rangers aren’t more resolute in defence, and have players who take personal responsibility, they will continue to lose to their bitter rivals.
