Rangers might be suffering a bit of a defensive crisis at present, but one centre-back who left the club is experiencing struggles at his new club in the English Football League.
George Edmundson left Ibrox in the summer as he joined Ipswich Town in a reported £1m deal [Daily Record] as part of a major rebuild at Portman Road.
Rangers since have lost Filip Helander through injury whilst questions remain on the suitability of Jack Simpson with some fans lamenting Edmundson’s exit.
Edmundson, 24, enjoyed a decent two-year spell at Ibrox but found chances limited amid stiff competition and off-field issues which ultimately signified his downfall at the club.
George was amongst the most high-profile of 20 Ipswich signings this summer after the appointment of ex-Wigan boss Paul Cook with the likes of ex-Ger Sone Aluko and highly-rated Rekeem Harper joining him.
But so far things have not gone to plan for the defender after he took his time breaking into the matchday squad due to an “unspecified injury” [EADT].
Edmundson missed the first five games of Ipswich’s league season before making his debut against Bolton at the beginning of September.
Since then, Edmundson has gone on to make three appearances for the Tractor Boys – including in their first league win of the season against Lincoln – but the rot continues in East Anglia.
Ipswich have one win from eight games in League One and currently sit in 21st place in the English third tier.
For Paul Cook and Ipswich the honeymoon period is certainly over and now Edmundson will be looking to go and make a proper impression on the side following his move from Ibrox.
Meanwhile, Rangers have struck a three-year deal with a highly-rated Northern Irish youth international.
