Derek McInnes has a major decision to make ahead of the new season as the Rangers manager, following James Tavernier’s departure.
The right-back was the undisputed leader of the team and wore the captain’s armband whenever he was in the side.
However, with him leaving and potentially there being a few more first-team exits, McInnes needs to hand the armband to someone who’s surely not going to leave in the coming weeks.
If Lewis Ferguson joins post the World Cup, who should Derek McInnes name the Rangers captain?
This is assuming Nicolas Raskin leaves Rangers…
Derek McInnes names Lawrence Shankland captain for pre-season friendly
Rangers took on Malaysian Super League outfit Johor Darul Ta’zim on Thursday, with the game ending 2-2.
This game gave McInnes a chance to try out a few things and see which players are best suited for his system.
What was more interesting was that he asked Lawrence Shankland to captain the side, in what was his first game since moving to Ibrox.
Which formation should Derek McInnes use at Rangers?
Given the players he's got so far, there are a number of ways that the team can play…
While it was a friendly game, it could be an insight as to where McInnes’ head is at going into the new season.
Andrew Cavenagh and, previously, Danny Rohl spoke about the lack of leaders inside the dressing room, which eventually saw the team faltering towards the end of the season.
Their recruitment this summer has also been geared towards addressing that issue, with most, if not all, signings having been lauded for their leadership abilities at their previous clubs.

Why Shankland will be a good choice for Rangers captain
McInnes has previously worked with Shankland at Hearts, so the duo know what they are in store for at Ibrox.
The expectations are higher, undoubtedly, but McInnes can trust the Scotland international to carry out instructions to a T.
This is why he makes an ideal candidate to be the captain going into the new season.
How many league goals will Shankland score for Rangers next season?
He could fire Rangers to a domestic treble!
Shankland is not only going to be among the first names on the team sheet, but he’s also experienced and can set an example for the young players, while also helping the new signings adapt to life at Ibrox.
He has been lauded for his captaincy at Hearts and has set the example with his training methods and also his maturity.
Being a boyhood Rangers fan, he knows what winning means to everyone involved at the club, and that is just what is needed to make this side a powerhouse in Scotland again.
