Celtic are looking to sign a defender who failed his medical ahead of a move to Rangers last summer.

The Light Blues were looking to bolster their back line 12 months ago, and had identified what they deemed to be the ideal centre-back option.

However, issues were flagged up during his medical and the club decided to pull the plug on the transfer.

What are your expectations for Dan Neil at Rangers next season?

Celtic prepare bid for Nobel Mendy despite him failing Rangers medical

Celtic are pursuing the services of Rayo Vallecano defender Nobel Mendy and are even ready to make a bid for him, according to Marca’s Matteo Moretto.

The Hoops are keen on a new centre-back this summer and have identified the 21-year-old as one of their primary targets.

The Senegal international is capable of playing as a left-back as well, but there is one major issue surrounding this deal for Celtic.

Mendy appeared set to move to Ibrox last summer, but he failed his medical and was unable to complete the transfer.

Personal terms and a £2.5m fee had already been agreed, but Rangers News has learned that the club felt there were significant issues that could have posed a long-term injury risk.

Real Betis, his club at the time, felt that there were no such issues, and Rayo Vallecano decided to take a gamble on him, signing him initially on loan.

Why Celtic’s pursuit of Mendy is good news for Rangers

The Rangers‘ medical staff clearly saw something with the defender last summer, which led to the deal not going through.

If, after a year, he’s moving to Celtic, it will be beneficial to the Gers as they managed to dodge a bullet while Celtic are potentially making a huge blunder.

Both sides will be going head-to-head for the title again next season, so it is important to secure these kinds of wins off the pitch.

Which area should Rangers prioritise on strengthening this summer? 🤔

Andrew Cavenagh has made some bold promises!

The Old Firm duo are in the market for centre-backs this summer and while there are a few overlapping targets, the Ibrox outfit are not considering Mendy in any way.

Rangers will need to amplify their defender hunt as Luke Graham will certainly not be joining them.

The 22-year-old will be moving to the English Championship, and Dundee have already accepted bids for him.
