Legendary Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso, has spoken out about Steven Gerrard’s start to life as a manager, as quoted by the Daily Record.

Alonso won the World Cup and two European Championships with his country, while he also experienced considerable success at domestic level, including two Champions League wins.

Therefore, the 114-cap midfielder is pretty well placed to talk about the art of winning silverware.

He played alongside Stevie G in Liverpool’s midfield between 2004 and 2009, and hails him as the most influential player in his career. Following on from that, he sees him as the man to bring the good times back to Ibrox.

Xabi Alonso says Rangers close to success

“He is interested in making the people he works with better players and if they want to improve there is nobody better to learn from,” said Alonso, as quoted by the Daily Record. “I am sure trophies are just around the corner for Rangers now Stevie is there. I am sure he is going to achieve special things at Rangers.”

“Stevie was not a normal player and he will not be a normal coach. He is a winner and will be a winner as a coach.

“He wants to teach, he is always there to have an honest conversation, that is why Rangers will continue to improve under his guidance.”

Verdict

Alonso has also recently entered the managerial game. He’s taken charge of the Reserves of his childhood club, Real Sociedad B, in the Spanish third tier.

Clearly, he’s full of admiration for his former teammate and is impressed by the work he’s done so far at Ibrox. Who wouldn’t be?

Rangers were lacking direction and competitiveness before the Gerrard revolution. It’s very early on in the season, yes. But right now, the club are competing on three fronts. Top of the league, in the League Cup semi-final and very much in the mix in Europa League Group G.

Xabi can see at least one of those competitions bringing success to the club, and we hope he’s right.
