Would things look different if we had Dorrans and Murphy available?

In today’s press conference, Steven Gerrard took the time to provide an injury update for Graham Dorrans and Jamie Murphy.

He was also very outspoken about the influence of the Scotland duo. And about how much Rangers have missed them.

Speaking before tomorrow’s match with Hibs, Gerrard said:

“Jamie Murphy is working really hard to make his body as strong as possible, I expect him to come back firing but he won’t be rushed.

“Dorrans is progressing well also, we hopefully will have him back for the end of January/February.

“Dorrans and Murphy are two key players for us in the final third of the pitch and we are looking for them to help us in the final half of the season.”

If that’s the case, just where would we be with a fully fit Graham Dorrans and Jamie Murphy in the side?

They certainly would’ve aided our cause

At the moment, we top the table, on goal difference at least. But there have been so many senseless points dropped in games where we lacked invention and experience. Sometimes even passion.

Dorrans and Murphy are bluenoses – it’s not everything, but it helps.

Aberdeen and Dundee in the last fortnight are prime examples. Even Rapid Vienna on Thursday is the same.

In the early season, there are multitudes of matches, particularly away from home, where we struggled with creativity.

Not having that creative, lock-picking midfielder has been one of the major gripes of the season so far too. Dorrans might’ve potentially been a key fixture in the side and a solution to that had he not been injured.

Now, Rangers will be looking to add to the side in January. And even if Rangers reportedly have their eyes on other creative midfielders, according to Gerrard that won’t influence Dorrans or Murphy’s role in the team.

But how different the league table might look if we’d had them available all year.
