Oli McBurnie is a well-known Rangers fan, but should he be considered as an alternative to Liverpool’s Dominic Solanke?
The Swansea City striker is making headlines for a breakthrough season this year in Wales. Despite only racking up four goals in 13 appearances at the Liberty Stadium, McBurnie’s overall game is impressive.
So much so that Alex McLeish has picked him in his last two Scotland squads since the Nations League got underway. His stock rose after a highly-successful period on loan at Barnsley last season. It was there where McBurnie notched nine goals in 16 appearances.
Rangers could, however, have trouble agreeing the right fee with Swansea. His game-time in Wales means that they’re highly unlikely to accept a short-term loan deal for their highly-rated star. Added to that, McBurnie only recently signed a new contract that will tie him to the Swans until at least 2021.
If the Gers were to look at McBurnie in January, they would have to fork out the cash.
Rangers have long been coveting Liverpool’s Solanke on a loan switch, but Jurgen Klopp didn’t want to see him leave in the summer. That’s not to say things couldn’t have changed between the summer and January. So far, Solanke has yet to make a single appearance for the Kop side this season.
If a loan deal is going to be feasible, then a deal for McBurnie wouldn’t be in question. But would the Championship striker be a good alternative if Solanke is still unattainable?
Many supporters will have their own opinions, but the Swansea striker is gathering quite a reputation. At the time of writing, McBurnie is strutting his stuff in the Scotland first-team against Portugal. How that contest goes remains to be seen, but he appears to be well-liked at both club and international level.
Anyone that keeps in touch with McBurnie’s social media accounts will also know of his keen love for the Gers.
As it stands, Umar Sadiq just isn’t working. It isn’t totally out of the question for Rangers to try and cut short his loan deal for a better option in January. With Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty the two main forwards, Steven Gerrard needs a high-quality third choice in there.
