Greg Docherty has spoken to the Daily Record about his Rangers future.
The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Shrewsbury Town in EFL League One. He made a total of 50 appearances there, helping the Shrews beat the drop and earning himself the club’s Player of the Year award.
As a Gers fan, though, he’s been itching to get back to Ibrox. He doesn’t want to just make up the numbers, either. He sees himself genuinely competing for a first-team spot.
“The
midfield has been terrific for Rangers, especially towards the end of the campaign,” Docherty told the Daily Record. “But I have to believe I can fight my way in there. I knew when I signed for the club there would be quality additions to the squad.”
“But I definitely feel I can bring something different to the midfield. I have belief in my own ability. In certain games, I believe I can contribute if the manager needs something different.”

Docherty is looking to a fellow blue nose, Andy Halliday, for inspiration. When he was shipped off on loan to Azerbaijan by Pedro Caixinha, he looked doomed. Yet, he fought his way back into the reckoning and made 35 appearances last season.
“He has shown in the last year just how much he wants to be at the club – that’s the guys I have to look at,” Docherty continued. “He’s willing to give his heart and soul for a jersey and I feel the same.”

Verdict
It’s good to see Docherty is so positive heading into the 2019/20 campaign.
He’s set to have a full pre-season to impress Steven Gerrard, and he fully intends on using it.
Initially, despite his impressive loan stint, it looks as though he will struggle to get a spot in the team. As he says, the midfield three of Glen Kamara, Steven Davis, and Ryan Jack were all superb over the final two months of the season.
However, all it takes is a suspension or an injury to throw the door wide open. The key for Docherty is being ready for that opportunity when it arises.
