Myles Beerman’s loan spell has most likely gone under the radar, but will he ever be of Rangers first-team standard again?
The Maltese left-back emerged as one of the few shining lights of Pedro Caixinha’s first few months at Ibrox. From his debut in a 0-0 draw at Kilmarnock, he impressed Gers fans at a time when the club were needing any positive they could get.
A couple of heavy Old Firm defeats and some mixed results before the end of the 2016/17 campaign, however, and Beerman was back on the bench.
A difficult loan spell at Queen of the South followed in the 2017/18 campaign. Beerman only made a total of four appearances in the Championship during a six-month stint at Palmerston.

Steven Gerrard has since come in the door and totally brought back the confidence to Ibrox once more. Every position in the squad has been improved with depth and quality, and left-back slot is one of the main ones.
Borna Barisic and Jon Flanagan arrived just after Beerman was sent to Malta for a loan spell with Birkirkara. His side are now sitting sixth in the Maltese league, having played in just three of their seven matches this season.
Just a boy
It’s important to stress that Beerman is only 19 years of age. In terms of his Ibrox future, he has plenty of growth and development left in him. In terms of the Gers first-team, however, it’s tough to see where the chances could come from.
It’s been vital that Beerman progressed during his loan spells. Whilst it’s still early into his tenure at Birkirkara, he certainly didn’t at Queen of the South. Against Tarxien Rainbows at the weekend, Beerman only came on for the final eight minutes.

If he’s to make any sort of impact upon his return, he needs to start impressing during his loan spells. When Beerman first came into the starting lineup at Ibrox, it was when the club was at its lowest ebb. Caixinha’s appointment didn’t exactly spark excitement, and it was at a time when it wasn’t as difficult to get into the Rangers squad.
When Beerman comes back to Ibrox at the end of the season, he’ll be at best fourth choice at left-back. Barisic, Flanagan, Andy Halliday, and Lee Wallace are all still ahead of him.
The youngster hasn’t developed as Rangers would’ve hoped so far, but he’s still yet to turn 20.
