Not much has been spoken of Graeme Murty’s managerial future since being sacked by Rangers.
The former Reading star was of course re-hired by the club to take up his previous role of managing the under-20s. He now manages the Rangers reserves after the recent change from the Development League to the Reserve League.
It seems to be a role that Murty’s confident in carrying out. He’s achieved some good results already this season – most notably a 6-2 win over Motherwell.

But does he have a future in senior management once again?
The answer is most likey yes if he wants it.
Many speak about how poor Murty was during his time at the club. Ultimately failing to challenge Celtic after a January of investment was disappointing to supporters. What people forget, however, is that it was Murty’s strong run of form that made that possible.
What the former Gers manager wrongly did was build up too much expectation. A narrow Ibrox defeat to Celtic and a draw at Celtic Park was commendable work by Murty.
Where he unfortuantely let himself down was the embarrassing results against Celtic that were to follow. We don’t need to go over those days again. Murty was at fault and all momentum had been sucked from the club.
A poor ending
The nature of those defeats killed him. The team was lacking spine, and Murty was too light with some players. He let too many off with consistently poor performances. Even players who spoke up and demanded more were fined and suspended from the club.
It was a sour end that started so positively for Murty.

Now, he must’ve learned so much from his time in the Ibrox hot-seat. Managers live and die by their decisions, but they also learn from their mistakes too.
Plenty of managers have failed to cut it in their first role in football, only to be a big success elsewhere. If Murty wants that chance, then he deserves to give it another go at a club less demanding than Gers.
Of course, perhaps he simply doesn’t want to. Maybe he’s had his fill of managerial drama over the last couple of years. Nobody could blame him given what he came from and what he was thrown into.
He seems to be enjoying life again with the reserves, and is enjoying it back in his comfort zone.
If he wants it, you have to imagine a job or two would open up for Murty. Be it in Scotland or down south, he deserves a fairer crack at the whip.
In the mean-time, he’ll continue doing a sterling job with the reserves.
