Republic of Ireland youth prospect John Mahon is being linked with both Rangers and Celtic.
The Sligo Rovers centre half, 19, is reportedly a target for both sides of the Old Firm according to the Express (19 February, page 47).
The same story also claims the Mahon would rather move to Celtic than Rangers. But is that surprising?

Celtic have a connection with the Republic of Ireland. Rangers have a connection with Northern Ireland. Let’s not get into the politics of the entire thing right now.
But the notion that an Irish youth player would sooner join the Irish linked club rather than their ferocious rivals is a non-story. Even if the Gers are interested.
But if Rangers get the step up on signing John Mahon, then should the club think twice about snapping him up?
For nothing more than he appears to be a Celtic fan?
Would loyalties lie with Rangers?
It’s perhaps not fair to question the defender’s personality or professionalism, but with Celtic dominating you must consider his commitment to the Rangers cause. We need players who’re willing to battle our rivals to take back the Scottish crown.

Michael O’Halloran, who recently re-joined St. Johnstone, is a prime example of signing the kind of Celtic supporting player who wasn’t up for the fight.
The links to John Mahon just feel like we’d be setting ourselves up for a fail. That’s if there’s any truth in them at all.
If Celtic really are his preferred destination, then it’s a move Rangers should definitely avoid.
