Rangers signing Glen Kamara could happen in January, but Steven Gerrard could do with letting his rivals snap up this one.
Kamara has now been linked with both Old Firm clubs as well as a variety of English sides. The Dundee midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season, with speculation growing that the Dees could cash in on January.
The Dees star has made 53 appearances at Dens Park, but hasn’t scored a single goal for the club. Yet he is an inventive player with some tidy footwork.
Rangers, however, have too many players of better quality than Kamara to throw him into the squad. Ovie Ejaria, Scott Arfield, and Lassana Coulibaly are all seriously impressing at Ibrox this season. If Gers signed Kamara, then he wouldn’t get a sniff in the midfield so long as performances remained of the same high standard.
The midfielder has also just recovered from a long-term ankle injury that ruled him out of the start of the season. This isn’t the first time Kamara has struggled with his ankle either. Rangers don’t need another injury-prone midfielder in their ranks. Jordan Rossiter and Ryan Jack seem to be covering that area quite well these days.
The third reason that Gers don’t need Kamara is his inconsistency. The former Arsenal youth product is full of fancy footwork and, on his day, can look a real handful. Yet, he hasn’t had too many of his days in recent memory.
Inconsistency since joining Dundee has plagued the youngster, who’s still only 22-years-old. He’ll get away with that at Dens Park with a side looking to fight their way out of relegation. At Ibrox? Not a chance.
And finally, Kamara simply isn’t good enough to be a Rangers midfielder. As mentioned previously, he’s a decent player when on his game, but he’s not a constant threat. Rangers need players in January that are going to improve the squad and help push their title-challenge. Kamara isn’t one that’s going to do that.
There is no proven pedigree when it comes to the Dundee midfielder. He’s a composed figure on the ball and may stand out in Dundee’s midfield, but that’s not saying much this season. Celtic made a foolish move in going for Jack Hendry, and Rangers shouldn’t do the same by signing up Kamara.
With such a variety of talent already at Ibrox, Gerrard should give this one a miss.
