Why Morelos’ temperament is so key to Rangers’ success

As Steven Gerrard’s squad gets into a highly-important part of the season, Alfredo Morelos’ temperament has to remain under control.

The Colombian has the world at his feet after receiving his first call-up to the national squad. Confidence is sure to be flowing on his return to Ibrox as Rangers look to bounce back from the Celtic defeat.

But one thing that has to be on Morelos’ mind throughout the campaign is this – don’t lose the head. Failure to do so will see Rangers short of striking options with how things are looking.

Outside of Morelos, Rangers only have Kyle Lafferty as a proven front-man. With Gerrard perhaps getting set to introduce a two-striker system, the only other cover would be Umar Sadiq.

Sadiq is currently untested, and can’t be trusted to do the business regularly. This is now a time of the season where Rangers need their big players to step up and be counted. Morelos needs to be one of those.

The youngster is Rangers’ top scorer so far this season with six goals. It’s a fine return during this early stage of the campaign.

The red mist

Yet, it’s important not to forget the two careless red cards Morelos has also picked up this season. Players will always be sent off from time to time, but what Gerrard doesn’t need is a consistent run of reds from his number one striker.

Lafferty works a lot better when someone is up alongside him. If he doesn’t have anyone, then he gets easily frustrated and can be crowded out.

With Morelos alongside him, this is the start of a beautiful partnership for Rangers supporters.

Red cards and it’s going to horribly change Rangers’ system and momentum. The Gers are already in a place where not too many slip-ups can be made in the near-future.

They need to rely on Gerrard’s strongest XI to start producing on a consistent basis. Morelos is a big part of that starting XI.

Any more rash kick-outs or petulant verbals could seriously diminish Rangers’ chances of a title-run.

On the other side, an on-fire Morelos full of goals and energy, and the Gers are onto a real winner.
