Some players seem destined for a life in coaching when they hang up their boots, former Rangers skipper Lee Wallace the perfect example.

The now retired left-back always had a mature head on his shoulders and spoke with the sort of calm authority that set him apart from most of his teammates.

According to an article in The Athletic, for players of Football Manager needing their fix with the season over, one-time Rangers captain Lee Wallace is the perfect addition to any backroom staff.

The ex-Scotland international has had an eye on coaching for some time.

Even when he was still playing for Rangers he was involved with Tynecastle FC in Edinburgh.

It looks as though the makers of the popular manager simulation game have been paying attention with The Athletic’s report on what coaches to hire giving a look at the qualities that Wallace would bring to your staff:

“The technical side of Wallace’s coaching attributes is very good. His determination, level of discipline and motivating stats are a little low, but that’s not the worst thing in the world given how strong his mental (15 out of 20) and tactical (16 out of 20) numbers are.”

The former Rangers left-back specifically comes in useful in tactics where possession is key, under Mark Warburton, Lee Wallace would have picked up a few good and bad ideas for this sort of system.

The 35-year old left the club under a cloud and probably didn’t get the send off or the recognition that he deserved.

Rangers should have done more in terms of noticing the commitment Lee Wallace made to the club when he retired, however, there was nothing.

A football obsessive who has always been a student of the game, Wallace will soon be starting out on the next phase of his career.

Who knows, a return to Ibrox could be on the cards if he is as good a coach in real life as he is in Football Manager.
