The Steven Davis signing rumours are going to crank up again, but what would it mean for Ovie Ejaria?

Many fans have been crying out for Rangers to get a deal done with the Northern Irishman, who’s been frozen out of first-team duties at Southampton. Despite that, there are also some voices of discontent, with some unhappy with Davis’ potential comeback due to how he left in the first place.

The former Rangers midfielder, however, has made just four appearances for the Saints this season. Incredibly, he’s actually had more outings for Northern Ireland than he has for his club, with five international caps to his name this term.

This could tempt Rangers to press ahead with a deal. There’s been nothing more on the situation in recent weeks, but the option is still there to plunge for the former three-in-a-row title-winner.

But what would that mean for current midfield-star Ejaria?

Ejaria plays just behind Scott Arfield in the midfield, but still gets into advanced positions. His record this season sits at just two goals and one assist in 25 Gers appearances.

Davis could play the Ejaria role

His role combines plenty of defensive work along with helping out attacks. His stats, however, don’t make for great reading.

Therefore, could Davis, if he signs up, end up replacing the Liverpool man in the side? He seems like the most logical replacement, as Davis won’t come to Glasgow to be a bench-warmer.

Ryan Jack is in terrific form, and plays a different role to Davis. Whilst there are some similarities there, Jack is totally defensive-minded, and has made that role his own this term.

Scott Arfield is seriously coming onto a game this season also. He would, however, be the second-favourite to be dropped for Davis if this deal went ahead. He’s finally scoring goals on a regular basis, and is one of the first names on the team-sheet.

With Gerrard tending to play three across the central midfield, Ejaria has to be the one who would come out. He’s a terrific talent and has done well at Ibrox this season. Davis, however, would be an upgrade, and that’s all that would matter in the end.

There’s still a high chance that this deal doesn’t go through anyway. Regardless, Steven Gerrard has still stated that he wants two midfielders in January.

Whether this is Davis or not, it may not mean great news for Ejaria.
