It was very a much a case of what might’ve been in the Europa League as Rapid Vienna took to the pitch against Inter Milan last night.
Rangers tumbled out of the European competition back in December after defeat in Vienna. Rapid’s prize for their 1-0 victory was a last 32 glamour tie with Italian giants Inter Milan.
The Austrians succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to the Nerazzurri thanks to a Lautaruo Martinez penalty.

Despite not making the knockout stages, it’s very difficult to look back in anger at our Europa League campaign. What a run and what a laugh.
There were some huge nights at Ibrox – which hasn’t seen atmospheres like that for close to a decade.
Almost every game saw Ibrox filled to the gunnels with raucous noise pouring over Govan. It was electric and under Gerrard there’s real hope those big nights are here to stay. The matches against Maribor and Rapid Vienna were particular highlights.
Then there was also some battling, passionate away days. From digging out a victory in Osijek to the results against Maribor, Ufa and Villareal, Rangers were the story of the tournament at times.

The players played through the pain barrier and done the club proud in what was our first European campaign in eight years. We set a new club record of 11 European games without defeat in a single season.
Whilst we narrowly missed out against Inter Milan, we can look back at the run with a lot of pride.
Let’s hope it’s the first of many under Steven Gerrard.
