What does January hold for back-up man Wes Foderingham?

As January boils nicely ahead of a huge transfer window, discussions may very well start being had over Wes Foderingham’s future.
The Rangers number two has hardly seen any action this season. He’s only managed four appearances, but has still made the bench on 28 other occasions this season for the club.
Therefore, it’s obvious that Foderingham is still highly-regarded at Ibrox. Steven Gerrard has complimented his back-up man in the past, but it’s difficult to see how Foderingham breaks the glass ceiling here.

Allan McGregor, Rangers’ number one, is an exceptional shot-stopper. He’s a couple of notches above Foderingham, and has a stunning 39 outings this term for club and country. Given the fact we’re only half-way through the season, that’s a scary return.
McGregor’s displays have solidified himself as the number one for Scotland – ousting Celtic’s Craig Gordon. In terms of a successful campaign, it couldn’t have went much better for the former Hull City man.
Meanwhile, Foderingham is having to twiddle his thumbs on the bench. There’s just no getting into this Rangers side with McGregor on that kind of form. Given the fact that Foderingham also has a contract for a further 18 months, he could be doing that a while yet.

Is the interest in Foderingham still there?

Speculation last month was revved up over a potential move to Leeds United. The Championship outfit are currently flying and would be a good prospect for Foderingham. Whether they revive their interest, however, remains to be seen.
There’s also the case that the club may not want to lose their number two shot-stopper. In terms of Scottish football, Foderingham is a reliable goalkeeper. He’s by no means perfect, but as a deputy you could do a lot worse.
If Rangers were to allow him to depart this month, they have no other viable alternatives.

Jak Alnwick is due to arrive back in Glasgow soon. His up-and-down loan-spell at Scunthorpe United has seen him want more. It’s unlikely that the club stand in his way should Scunthorpe come calling again for a further six months.
Therefore, Steven Gerrard could probably do without the headache of replacing a number two this January.
For Foderingham, however, it would be interesting to find out his thoughts on the issue. But at the moment, it looks like he’ll be staying put.
