There was a time when Frank de Boer was the first choice with many Rangers fans for the managerial hot seat at Ibrox.
The former Gers defender and his brother Ronald – another ex-Rangers Dutch hero – were a classy management team many saw as the duo to turn the club’s fortunes around.
There was even talk of the Dutch boss “considering” the role. But time has told us that Rangers made the right choice in Steven Gerrard.

Now the manager at Atlanta United in the MLS, Frank de Boer is currently sitting fourth in the Eastern Conference of America’s top division.
Six points off the top and with two games in hand, it’s been a promising start for the legendary 112 times capped Holland defender.
Disregarding a recent 5-1 scolding at the hands of Chicago Fire in the midst of the North American Gold Cup, it’s been a fruitful first season in charge of the club so far.
The Georgian Club is also in the quarter-final of the US Open Cup.
But when you consider the Americans splashed out over £11m on one player in the close season, you have to ask how de Boer would’ve coped with our budget.
Steven Gerrard has by-and-large filled the squad with British talent and used his local contacts to snap up players suitable for Rangers.
The likelihood is de Boer would’ve invested a considerable amount in European players and needed time for his philosophy to work its way into a fractured squad.

Time is something Rangers do not have at present.
Instead of shelling out for the glamour of the former Ajax, Crystal Palace and Inter Milan boss, Rangers were largely ridiculed for the “risk” they took on the inexperienced Steven Gerrard.
It’s a risk which, so far at least, looks to have really paid off at Ibrox.
