Rangers Managing Director Stewart Robertson said at today’s Rangers AGM that a repeat of Celtic’s indulgent celebrations towards fans are not welcome “anywhere”.
Following Celtic’s 1-0 win at Parkhead, their team gluttonously celebrated towards the Rangers fans and took part in a lap of honour. They got the rise they were after and there were some angry scenes.
Police Scotland criticised the move by the Celtic team. They claim it “inflamed an already delicate situation”.
But was the Rangers supremo hinting something to the Rangers team with his statements?
If Rangers were to win, we wouldn’t expect the same
It’s easy to say you wouldn’t revel in Rangers players winding up Celtic fans. Especially given how much their players have got away with in the last two seasons.
Daniel Candeias is sent off for blowing kisses. Celtic players near incite a riot and its Rangers who’re criticised.
But while it might feel good to be vengeful, Stewart Robertson is right. Was he warning the Rangers side not to repeat the action and stoop to their level if we get a result in at Ibrox?
Not only only will cause unnecessary problelems, but it isn’t our main aim. If Rangers can defeat Celtic come the end of December, the players should listen to him. Because inflicting a defeat which sparks a title challenge is a hell of a lot more painful that gesturing to the opposition.
Rangers don’t need to goad anyone. We just need to focus on maintaining a run at 55.
Beat Celtic and it could make 2019’s AGM a very interesting one indeed.
And not because we felt it neccessary to get one over on the opposition supporters.
