As Rangers boss Steven Gerrard took a press conference looking forward to the club’s Old Firm derby with Celtic, there appeared to be a few mind-games afoot.
Not with the opposition, although they were routinely mentioned. But more with his own players.
The Rangers manager repeatedly called on his players to enjoy the atmosphere, to use it, and not to give too much respect to Celtic. It’s clear he’s trying to get a message across.
The Rangers boss even shut down a reporter who claimed Celtic Park was akin to a “lion’s den”. He urged his players to relish the opportunity.
The former Liverpool and England captain also sent a warning to anyone who doesn’t listen.
“You have to thrive in this atmosphere”, said Gerrard. “If any of my players don’t fancy it they are at the wrong club.”
The former midfielder even went as far to say he relished playing in derbies away from home more so than at Anfield.
All of this is aimed at deconstructing the narrative around Celtic and Celtic Park. It’s about ensuring the players know that when they’re out on the field, it’s eleven v eleven.
And if the occasion overawes them, they’ll struggle to make it into his side in the long-term.
Warnings, mind-games, comforting words – whatever you call them – Steven Gerrard isn’t messing around.
And he’s trying to ensure his player don’t either.
