Steven Gerrard has been criticised by a Channel 4 journalist after he refused to show up for a pre-arranged interview.
Ciaran Jenkins took to Twitter to blast the Rangers boss after he never turned up nor offered an explanation for doing so. But all isn’t exactly what it seems from the below Twitter thread.
The interview was supposed to centre around the forthcoming film on Gerrard’s Liverpool career. The questions, therefore, should’ve largely centred on that film. Jenkins makes it clear that that Gerrard’s representative challenged him on the questions he was going to ask Gerrard during the interview.
Jenkins then goes on to comment on questions involving his wife and sectarianism in Scotland. It is clear from these tweets that Jenkins intended to unfairly press Gerrard on both subjects.
Both subjects are incredibly sensitive and both lines of enquiry are seemingly directed with the intention of stoking controversy. This doesn’t look like an interview on the Gerrard film at all. It looks like Jenkins is trying to create a story which isn’t really there.
He then, rather loosely and smugly, seems to justify this line of enquiry with comments on Gerrard being linked with Chelsea whilst a Liverpool player. It’s pretty tragic. The “vitriol” with regards Gerrard’s Chelsea situation isn’t even in the same ballpark as these questions.
Did Jenkins gets what he deserved?
It’s not Jenkins place to speak about Steven Gerrard’s wife. It’s also not Steven Gerrard’s place to solve issues concerning sectarianism in Scotland. What good would any of this have done?
This is also wildly obtuse from Jenkins. He would’ve solved nothing here and merely sought to antagonise Gerrard and a sensitive situation in Scotland.

Gerrard wouldn’t have stood a chance. Even though Rodgers refused to answer similar questions on the Alfredo Morelos coin incident. As far Gerrard is concerned, this wasn’t worth the drama.
No wonder Jenkins was left waiting. What did he expect? He tried to take advantage of his position at Channel 4 and the interview he’d been given with regards the film to create a drama. Gerrard was a few steps ahead. As far as he is concerned, the football is a much more pressing matter.
It looks like Jenkins got exactly what he deserved.
