Versatile defender-turned-midfielder Ross McCrorie has officially left Rangers and moved to Scottish Premiership rivals Aberdeen.

The once highly-rated Rangers Academy youth product has made the move up north on an initial loan deal and will sign a three-year-contract next season.

The former Scotland U21 captain is now 22 and has found chances at a premium in Steven Gerrard’s side.

This signing comes as a shock considering that Aberdeen are considered amongst Rangers’ fiercest rivals and this is a player who was once highly rated by the club.

By selling him to Aberdeen Rangers have strengthened one of the division’s strongest sides but the club have conceded that all of this is more about Ross than anyone else.

The youngster wanted to play football and will now get a chance to prove himself under Derek McInnes at Pittodrie.

“Having progressed through our Academy to make 55 appearances for Rangers we thank Ross for his contribution to the club over the years,” said Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson [Rangers].

“Ross wants to play regularly and asked us to allow him to leave permanently if we received an approach to sign him which we have respected.

“He’s a fantastic lad and on behalf of all at Rangers we wish him well.”

Scottish Premiership rivals Hibs were also said to be interested in the player and reportedly submitted at least two bids for the versatile youngster [Edinburgh Live].
