Under fire Rangers star receives praise on Twitter from Europa League account

Rangers 3-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League gave the Ibrox side a massive boost in our quarter-final ambitions, with many players performing out of their skin as the UEFA Europa League Twitter account lavished praise on Allan McGregor.

The 40-year-old has been under fire in recent weeks following a series of mistakes, with many thinking he should be dropped and replaced by Jon McLaughlin between the sticks.

When push comes to shove, McGregor is our finest keeper, and many would argue he has been one of the greatest goalkeepers the club has ever seen, and he will be sorely missed when he finally departs the club.

Following a few jittery moments earlier on against Red Star, McGregor saved a penalty from Aleksandar Katai in what was a sliding doors moment in the tie. With the Serbian side having two goals disallowed for offside, scoring the penalty could have given them a boost, but the Scot was superb and proved how good he is.

This led to some unique praise from the Europa League Twitter account, who posted a picture of McGregor making the penalty save with the caption reading “still going strong at 40” with a glove and flexing bicep emoji after.

Hopefully, this puts to bed the notion of Giovanni van Bronckhorst potentially dropping the player and this faith put in him will be reaping the benefits. Three clean sheets in a row will do wonders for his confidence and we need him at his best to have any hopes of retaining our league crown.

Meanwhile, three talking points emerged from the European win over Red Star Belgrade in another famous night under the lights at Ibrox.
