‘Uncomfortable’ ex-Rangers striker criticises Philippe Clement for treatment of key player

The pressure is mounting on Philippe Clement as Rangers slip 11 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race.

The Belgian manager, 50, has overseen a stuttering start to the new season after a controversial summer rebuild and the signing of several players for whom the jury remains out.

Now, one former Ibrox striker has claimed Rangers are only ‘delaying the inevitable’ the longer they hold on to Philippe Clement.

Ex-Ibrox hitman Ross McCormack then went on to question the ongoing management of under-fire Ibrox striker Cyriel Dessers, who was hooked at half-time in the 1-1 draw with Dundee United.

Ross McCormack on Philippe Clement

“I think by all accounts it’s not happened yet,” McCormack told BBC Sport. “But I think it might be delaying the inevitable to be honest.

”I think probably most Rangers fans if the news was correct tonight they would probably have been happy with (Philippe Clement being sacked).

”Even you look at the game at the weekend when he takes Dessers off at half-time. I mean, is that really deserving?

”He brought him into the game in the semi-final, he brought him back into the game against Olympiacos in the Europa League.

”But I don’t think there’s a right or wrong time to do it. I just look at things that are happening right now at Ibrox and I’m not really comfortable with it.

”I think there’s a lot going on at Ibrox right now and, you know, sometimes you can see the tide turning.

“Maybe they get a performance, maybe they get a result, but at the minute nothing seems to be going right.”

Rangers manager says Cyriel Dessers ‘not good enough’

Whilst Ross McCormack has criticised Philippe Clement for subbing Cyriel Dessers off against Dundee United, the Rangers manager has previously defended his position.

Clement criticised Cyriel Dessers and Mohamed Diomande following the 1-1 Scottish Premiership draw.

With Brazilian striker Danilo coming on to assist Vaclav Cerny, Romanian playmaker Ianis Hagi also impressed after another abject Diomande performance.

Philippe Clement hailed both his substitutes but he insisted that the performance of those who left the pitch was ‘not good enough’ over the weekend.

”We had some players who performed normal,” Clement said after the game. “But we had some players who were not good enough today.

”Who were not available enough today, who were not brave enough today.

”That’s why I made also some changes in half-time with players who had a good impact.

”We need to show much more like what we showed in the second so I’m going to be harsh on that.”
