UEFA have announced that two European club games will be affected by measures relating to the COVID-19 virus and while Rangers vs Bayer Leverkusen is currently set to go ahead as planned, the governing body has suggested further calls may be made in the coming days [UEFA.com].
In an update released on Monday evening, the governing body advised that PSG vs Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and Olympiacos vs Wolves in the Europa League will both be played behind closed doors this week.
Furthermore, Inter Milan vs Stade Rennais FC in the UEFA Youth League has been cancelled entirely, due to Inter’s refusal to fulfil the fixture.
Later on Monday night, it emerged that Serie A had been suspended until 3rd April as Italy is placed on lockdown [BBC Sport].
UEFA have advised that any updates on the status of other fixtures will be published on their website.
At this stage, it seems that Thursday’s first leg clash against Bayer Leverkusen will still take place at a packed Ibrox, but there’s uncertainty over the second leg in Germany.
That’s because while there has been no official decision as yet, the leader of the regional government in North Rhine-Westphalia recently backed calls from the German health minister to cancel all events expected to have attendances in excess of 1000 people [Thelocal.de].
Given that thousands of Bears set to make the midweek trip to Leverkusen, the sooner a decision is made here, the better.
