Celtic leaders Callum McGregor and Cameron Carter-Vickers are major injury doubts for the upcoming Old Firm clash with Rangers at Ibrox.
At least that’s according to Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, who is ‘crossing his fingers’ to have both players back available for action after the upcoming international break.
Rangers are set to welcome Celtic to Ibrox on April 7th with the match set up to be a potentially pivotal in the Scottish Premiership title race.
The loss of captain Callum McGregor and vice-captain Cameron Carter Vickers for such a pivotal game obviously represents a massive blow for Celtic.
Celtic to lose Callum McGregor to injury?
Rangers will be watching the situation very closely with Callum McGregor carrying an Achilles injury and Cameron Carter Vickers pulling out ahead of their Scottish Cup win over Livingston.
Speaking about McGregor, Rodgers said: “It always is (difficult) if you have your top players and your captain not available. Of course, there will be other players who can come in, but the level that he brings the game to is beyond what a lot of our players can do. Fingers crossed again we can get to the bottom of that and he’ll be available after the international break.”
Speaking about Cameron Carter Vickers, the Celtic manager said: “Hopefully it’s nothing too serious. We just have to wait and see. If players are fit and available then we can’t stop him going, that’s internationals. He’ll obviously be called up for the USA I’m sure, but we’ll just have to wait and see what the scan result says.”
The comments have raised fears within Celtic circles ahead of the trip to face Rangers, with Brendan Rodgers also facing a ban from the dugout for the game after comments made following defeat to Hearts.
Rangers medical department continues to be busy
Rangers obviously don’t have their own injury problems to seek and fans will be taking everything that comes out of Celtic’s camp with a pinch of salt.
Whilst there are plenty of online rumours suggesting Callum McGregor is out for the season due to the injury, there’s been no official confirmation from Celtic sources.
Cameron Carter-Vickers, who has been routinely injured since joining Celtic, is also clearly out of the side as a precaution at this stage.
Rangers have several key players set to return for the Old Firm clash, with the likes of Rabbi Matondo coming back v Hibs and Todd Cantwell and Abdallah Sima edging closer to fitness.
However the Gers’ injury problems continue to persist with no news on when Ryan Jack, Scott Wright, Kieran Dowell, Oscar Cortes, or Danilo will be back for the team.
Dujon Sterling and Ross McCausland were both forced off in the Scottish Cup win over Hibs.
