On the final day of the summer transfer window, three players left Ibrox.
Jason Holt joined St Johnstone on a season-long loan, while both Graham Dorrans’ and Joe Dodoo’s contracts were terminated.
No longer attached to the club, they were free to move on to their next challenge, with prospective suitors able to swoop without parting with a fee.
However, almost three weeks on, and both players are still club-less.
Two former Rangers players still looking for next challenge
Many of us find it difficult to understand how Rangers struggle to sell players. The club seems to always be paying up contracts to get rid of ‘deadwood’, rather than bringing in transfer fees.
As then Director of Football, there were rumours that the club were unhappy that Mark Allen was unable to reverse that trend [Scottish Sun via Daily Mail]. Yet, the lack of developments on these players since their departures, shows just how tough a job he had trying to convince clubs to buy the likes of Dodoo and Dorrans.

Tempting offers don’t appear to be coming in even now, despite there being very little financial risk attached with moving for either player.
Dundee boss James McPake has admitted he’s interested in signing Dorrans [Scottish Sun]. The player himself appears to be stalling though, perhaps waiting for a better offer. It’s hard to blame him, considering he is an international with considerable Premier League experience, being offered a switch to the Scottish Championship.
As for Dodoo, it was suggested that EFL League One club Bolton, who were recently saved from financial ruin, were interested in his signature. No move has materialised yet, though, and his search for a new home continues.
Surely, something will happen for both players in the near future.
However, it just goes to show that when players are out of favour, have injury problems, or both, they can prove extremely hard to shift. Even when they’re available for free.
