Turkish giants Besiktas has reportedly reignited their interest in former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard following his sacking from Premier League Aston Villa.

The 42-year-old Liverpool legend has been relieved of his duties at Villa Park after stuttering form over his 11 months in charge with the Birmingham club.

The former Rangers manager left Ibrox under a cloud of controversy when he signed for the Villains in November last year and it’s a move that hasn’t paid off as the ex-England captain is handed his P45.

But Steven Gerrard might not be out of a job for long if Super Lig side Besiktas can tempt the ex-Rangers boss with a move to Istanbul.

According to BeIN Sports broadcaster Gürler Akgün, Gerrard is one of five managers on a Besiktas shortlist to replace Valerian Ismael after he was sacked by the Turkish club following a 2-1 defeat to Hatayspor.

”An offer has been made to Valerien Ismael to terminate the contract,” said Akgün, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“Besides Şenol Güneş, Steven Gerrard, Mircea Lucescu, two names currently working in Spor Toto Süper Lig are on the agenda.”

Steven Gerrard linked to Besiktas during time at Rangers

Those Rangers fans with a good memory will remember that this is not the first time Besiktas have been linked with a move for Steven Gerrard.

Back in 2019, whilst the Englishman was still Rangers manager, the Turkish giants were being linked by the press in the Eastern country.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Besiktas were eyeing a box-office move for global superstar Steven Gerrard during only his second season as Rangers manager.

For whatever reason, a move never materialised and Rangers boss Gerrard continued as Ibrox manager, eventually going on to secure 55 before moving to Aston Villa midway through last season.

But what a turn-up for the books it would be to see Steven Gerrard rock up at Besiktas as he looks to rebuild his reputation following an ill-fated stint at Villa Park.

Meanwhile, a Steven Gerrard Aston Villa clue is certainly ominous for Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
