Todd Cantwell should heed his own ‘ego’ advice as Rangers outcast fishes for sympathy

The Todd Cantwell saga is one that Philippe Clement could have done without this summer as he looks to rebuild Rangers.

A once £50m rated playmaker when he was strutting his stuff in the Premier League is now faced the reality of training on his own, not having any offers and, potentially, having to swallow his pride if he wants to rejoin the squad and be selected by the manager.

The Rangers number 13’s latest Instagram tantrum is one that fans have seen before and one that serves only as another reminder of the player’s own hypocrisy.

Todd Cantwell misses point with Rangers sympathy post

Posting a video that has two images of a football stadium, one empty and one with fans, with comments saying “the support” and the other saying “the congratulations”.

What he is implying is that everyone loves him when he is playing well and scoring goals, however, when he isn’t, there is nobody there for him.

Who this is aimed at is unclear.

It could be Philippe Clement, but then, the manager protected Cantwell when he handed in his first transfer request and gave him time to reconsider, taking him out the limelight.

The player himself has also spoken highly of the Gers boss in the past too:

“Listen, me and the manager have had a lot of conversations and I have got a lot of respect for the manager. I think he is a good person as well as a good manager.

“For me personally, in football you have to hide your ego a little bit sometimes and you have to understand that things aren’t always done for your best interest, it is the club’s best interest. I think we have got a manager on our hands who cares very, very much about the club.

“I would like to think I do have a good attitude. The club is always more important than any individual, I believe that. It is probably more important here than at most clubs.”

Cantwell has had his chance to be a Rangers hero

Is it the fans?

The 26-year old spoke only last season about loving the expectation and the pressure before declaring his love for Rangers, he can’t be surprised when fans are upset at the club’s best number 10 downing tools.

The same applies with his teammates.

They will see Cantwell training on his own when he could be with the B team or the first team and still playing games.

Look at Cyriel Dessers, a player Clement was happy to sell, Rangers accepted an offer and would probably accept another one too and yet the big striker has still been committed to the cause.

Cantwell has spoken in the past about learning from his mistakes from his acrimonious exit from Norwich City, unfortunatley, it appears as though history is repeating itself.
