Andy Halliday has been pleased with how Rangers have begun their transfer window ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Questions were asked of Danny Rohl and the squad following the dismal end to the 2025/26 campaign.

The owners decided to back Rohl despite finishing third and are now putting their money where their mouths are to bring new players to Ibrox.

Andy Halliday believes Lawrence Shankland can become Rangers captain

Halliday has been pleased with the Gers as they secured the services of Lawrence Shankland from Hearts.

The Light Blues took advantage of a clause in his contract that allowed him to leave Tynecastle just a year after signing an extension there.

This meant that Rangers did not even need to cough up a transfer fee for one of the best attackers in Scotland.

With James Tavernier leaving, Rohl will need to appoint a new captain ahead of the new season.

Halliday says that his preferred pick would depend on who else the club sign this summer, but based on the players already at Ibrox, he thinks Shankland is the best fit.

He told Open Goal: “He ticks every box, I think, that Rangers need.”

When asked if he would make Shankland the captain, Halliday responded: “Depending on who else comes in. Based on what they’ve got in the building now, I think he’d be the best candidate.”

What Danny Rohl will be thinking before deciding on his captain

Rohl has spoken extensively that he is looking to bring in leaders this summer, as it was evident last season that the lack of leadership cost the team in crucial moments.

The German would want someone who’s not only a good communicator, but also someone who leads by example.

How many league goals will Shankland score for Rangers next season?

He could fire Rangers to a domestic treble!

He would want the skipper to front up to the media and the fans when things go wrong and not throw his teammates or anyone at the club under the bus.

Rohl will know that the captain may also lose the fans, as was the case with Tavernier, so he would need to have the kind of character to drive through despite the hate.

Shankland does tick a lot of these boxes, and there is a good chance that he’ll be named the captain.
