One accusation that can’t be thrown at Barry Ferguson is that he doesn’t know what he is letting himself in for as he takes on the Rangers job.

A Hall of Fame legend who has played for three of the club’s most successful bosses should have a basic understanding of the standards required and what the demands of Ibrox are after all.

What Barry Ferguson also knows, is what it takes to be the Rangers captain, with previous comments about James Tavernier potentially coming back to haunt him.

Barry Ferguson has been vocal about Rangers skipper James Tavernier

Speaking after the 3-0 Old Firm defeat earlier in the season, Ferguson clearly wasn’t happy with Tavernier’s leadership

“I was captain of the team but I also had four or five teammates who wouldn’t shut up on the pitch. I’m being serious and it’s so important. You need communication, you need to sometimes give people a kick up the backside, you need to let them know ‘listen we need to get our finger out here, this is not good enough’.”

The former midfield playmaker also didn’t hold back when Tavernier was dropped

“You can’t expect to be bombproof just because you happen to be the skipper.”

Who has Ferguson said he would pick at right back?

At the moment, Tavernier is keeping his place in the team almost by default.

With no Neraysho Kasanwirjo or Dujon Sterling, the skipper has a clear run.

However, when asked who he would pick at right-back ahead of games against Spurs and Celtic, Ferguson said:

“I’d go Sterling. The only issue you have with Sterling is he missed a couple of games there, he had a blocked nerve in his back, or his side, I can’t remember exactly where it was.”

The Rangers manager hasn’t quite two-footed Tavernier, but a line has been drawn in the sand with the standards clear for all to see.
