If ever there was a symbolic move which summed up the madness of the English Premier League, it’s Brighton reportedly being set to splash out £25m to sign Bristol City defender Adam Webster.
Admittedly, I know little about the 24-year-old centre-back, but it appears a hefty fee for a player who’s never kicked a Premier League ball in his career.
A former England youth international (to U19 level) there’s no doubt he’s highly rated down south. But what does his value say about Rangers’ Connor Goldson?

Goldson was a firm fan favourite at Brighton before he was allowed to join Rangers for a reported £3.5m.
The big 26-year-old English defender remains the most expensive member of our side.
Following heart surgery in 2017, Goldson’s future on the south-coast was very much up in the air.
But the defender rallied back to make eight appearances in 17/18 before moving to Rangers, including three in the Premier League.

Seemingly unable to budge Brighton stalwarts Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy, Rangers have taken a chance on the defender.
In return,
Talented players who’re from down south tend to go for an absolute fortune.
The reported Webster deal is part of a three-way carousel of English defenders.
Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Harry Maguire (

The Bristol City defender would then be signed to replace Dunk at Brighton for £25m. That’s £155m changing hands in total.
Whilst fees in Scotland differ considerably, and Adam Webster is currently flavour of the month in the Championship, all of this makes you think what a fit Connor Goldson is worth.
You certainly couldn’t find it down the back of your sofa anyway.
