When it comes to Rangers vs Ayr United, changes are likely to be made by Steven Gerrard.
Rangers will host the Championship side on Wednesday in the Betfred Cup quarter-finals. It’s a clash that Rangers cannot afford to take lightly, and will need to field a strong team regardless of the stats heading into the game.
At the same time, however, Rangers have to keep things fresh. With so many games on the horizon between now and the Winter break, Rangers need to keep rotating.
Therefore, ahead of the game on Wednesday, who could really do with a start against Ian McCall’s Championship leaders?
This is the one that stands out to us more than anybody.
Sadiq hasn’t started a competitive game for Rangers, and is struggling to make an impact. Added to that, he’s also yet to score a competitive goal for the club.
Being on-loan from Roma, the striker will want to make sure he impresses soon in order to get the first-team football he craves. With the form of both Kyle Lafferty and Alfredo Morelos, however, that will be extremely tricky.
The Nigerian forward was in the news earlier this month talking about his Rangers future. He claimed he still wants to fight for his place at the club and make sure he becomes a success.
In order for him to do that, you feel he needs to start games like Wednesday night. Gerrard has admitted that he needs to use his squad wisely, meaning Sadiq should be a part of the rotation system.
If he isn’t, then his standing at Ibrox is a lot worse than first realised.
He certainly isn’t in the same boat as Sadiq, but Dorrans could do with starting against Ayr United.
The former West Bromwich Albion midfielder has just recovered from a long-term injury that ruled him out of the start of the season. It was a huge blow to Dorrans and even Gerrard given the qualities he possesses.
The injury led to big speculation about his own future. We even speculated whether he could become a peripheral figure at Ibrox given the performances of those in direct competition to Dorrans.
Credit must be handed to the Scottish internationalist however. Since returning, he put in a stellar cameo dislay against La Liga giants Villarreal. The draw was a huge boost for the club, but Dorrans’ camero was extremely impressive.
Now, it would make sense for him to be thrown in against Ayr United. It’s a match made in heaven for Dorrans as he looks to impress Gerrard and get his confidence up.
If he started that one, you have to imagine he would run the show. Such is his determination levels, Dorrans could easily use this match as a springboard to get his Ibrox career back on track.
He certainly doesn’t need it, but Middleton could certainly use a start against Ayr on Wednesday night.
The left-winger has made eight appearances so far under Gerrard, and is a huge star in the making.
Fans have been excited about Middleton since he signed, but recent performnces have cranked that up several notches. He slotted home his first Rangers goal last weekend at home to Dundee before playing a big part in the second equaliser at Villarreal.
With Ryan Kent still playing week-in, week-out, it wouldn’t be a bad decision to give Middleton a shot. The former Norwich City kid is desperate to impress at Ibrox, and could do some real damage to Ayr.
He’s arguably the best young talent at the club at the moment, and needs to be given the spotlight. He won’t become a first-team regular this season. In truth, it could take several years for Middleton to become a consistent starter at the club.
Supporters, however, deserve a glimpse into Rangers’ future with a start for him against the Championship side.
