The one area Rangers can expose on Sunday

If they’re to get a result, Rangers have to punish Celtic down the left on Sunday.

It’s a colossal fixture at Celtic Park that could determine whether we have a title race on our hands or not. A Rangers win at Parkhead would signal and solidify Rangers’ return to relevance under Steven Gerrard.

But a defeat and it could all turn sour very quickly.

That’s why it’s essential that the Ibrox side take advantage of Celtic’s main weakness at right-back and exploit it.

Brendan Rodgers’ men have been having defensive issues all season. At the heart of their back-line, they’re conceding soft goals that will give Kyle Lafferty and Alfredo Morelos confidence. Lafferty already has a goal against Celtic to his name this season whilst at Hearts.

Yet it’s down the left side that Rangers can seriously profit from.

Left-hand profits

Mikael Lustig has had an inconsistent time of it against the Ibrox side. He’s been part of the Celtic team that has terrorised the Gers over the last two years. However, his own individual performances haven’t been as impressive as score-lines would suggest.

It was proven last season that he was Celtic’s main weak link. When Declan John or Josh Windass clicked, the Swedish international struggled to keep Rangers quiet.

Rangers have better quality down that side this season in Ryan Kent if early impressions are anything to go by.

If he and Borna Barisic can strike up an understanding and get going at Lustig, it’s an area that should be targeted by Gerrard. Lustig has had an impressive career, but it’s well acknowledged that defensively he’s suspect.

Breakout performance

Over the last week, we spoke about Kent potentially putting in a breakout performance in the coming games. It’s still yet to come to fruition, but he’s bound to get his chance on Sunday at Parkhead. The on-loan Liverpool ace could do himself a huge favour and target Lustig whenever possible.

If he does, that’s when he’ll need to show whether he has better decision-making than the likes of Windass or Jamie Murphy.

Make no mistake about it, Sunday will be a tough challenge. Rangers, however, could do themselves a big favour and target Lustig like there’s no tomorrow.
