Rangers vs St Mirren tends to be one of the most one-sided rivalries in the Scottish game.

This Sunday, the pair will meet for the first time this season. St Mirren are now managed by Oran Kearney, with Rangers looking to build some momentum once more under Steven Gerrard.

Yet, Rangers certainly have history on their side as they so often do in domestic matches. Throughout history, Rangers have bested St Mirren on an incredible 186 occasions. The Buddies, on the other hand, have only beaten the Gers on 33 occasions.

Since their first match all the way back in 1890, there’s been just 52 draws between both teams in 271 encounters. 30 of those Buddies wins have been on league duty.

The match is set to take place at St Mirren’s New St Mirren Park. Of course, not all away matches for Rangers in the past have been played here. At home, the Buddies have had their most joy in the fixture as you would expect. They’ve managed to only avoid defeat, however, in five of their last 20 meetings with the Gers.

A change in goal-scoring fortune?

Rangers had been in fine goal-scoring form in the early stages of the season, but they’ve dried up since. The train of thought is that St Mirren will provide them with a huge chance to get back on track in that department. The stats back that up after all, with Rangers only failing to score in six of their last 54 matches against the Buddies.

These two sides have been acquainted rather well in recent years. Despite both sides being in the lower leagues a few years ago, Rangers did meet St Mirren in the Championship.

Over the course of the five meetings they had in that time, Rangers won four of them. Their only blip was a 2-2 draw in Paisley back in May 2016. The two sides also met earlier this season, with Rangers coming out on top in a simple 2-0 win at Ibrox.

More recently, Rangers have scored just one goal in their last three matches. Fortunately, St Mirren have shipped goals in six of their seven matches under the new man. Saints have also failed to score in five of them. They’ve yet to score more than one goal in a game under the new boss.

It’s set to be a big occasion for Rangers as they hope to get back on track. One things’ for sure, the stats are certainly in their favour.
