The importance of Lassana Coulibaly was on full show against Dundee

Lassana Coulibaly’s performance against Dundee showed why he can’t miss many more games this season.

Instantly, the Malian looked composed, aggressive, and itching to make an impression on the game. This resulted in a dominant performance from Rangers as they ran out convincing 4-0 winners.

It was all built on Coulibaly’s performance, and not only because he opened the scoring. There was so much more bite to Rangers in the engine room with the tenacious midfielder back in the side.

Barry Ferguson spoke last week of how he wondered what the Old Firm score would’ve been had Coulibaly played. The on-loan Angers man was missing for a few weeks with a frustrating thigh injury. Whilst you would’ve been right at the time to question Ferguson, you can’t help but start agreeing with that sentiment after watching Coulibaly yesterday.

As well as that, it’s interesting how much better everyone else seems to look when he’s on the park.

Scott Arfield looked like a different player at Ibrox yesterday. He was another with total composure, with Coulibaly’s aggressive performance allowing Arfield to focus on what he does best.

Before the match yesterday, Rangers had only scored three goals from central midfield. Despite his reputation as a solid defensive-midfielder, it appears that Coulibaly also has goals in him. He he isn’t afraid to push on and join attacks at the right moment, and he could’ve easily scored more than one goal yesterday.

He’s Rangers’ main man at the moment, and has made such a huge impression since arriving on-loan from Angers in the summer. Of all of Steven Gerrard’s new signings, this is the one that looks like the standout.

It’s going to be difficult for any of the Rangers midfielders on the outside looking in at the moment. Ryan Jack’s injury will give an opportunity to someone, but that’ll probably be Ovie Ejaria (who was a surprise omission yesterday.

One thing’s for sure, however, Coulibaly simply can’t ever be the one to drop out.
