Tam McManus has delivered his verdict on how Philippe Clement would have fared at Rangers under the new owners.

Andrew Cavenagh and his consortium, along with the 49ers Enterprises, bought the Gers in May 2025 and one of the first decisions they had to make was regarding the manager.

Barry Ferguson was the interim manager at the time, but the Americans opted to part ways with him and decided to hire Russell Martin.

Tam McManus believes Philippe Clement would have won Rangers the Scottish Premiership

McManus is of the view that Clement, under the current owners, would have taken Rangers to new heights and they would have been clear this season in the Scottish Premiership.

In his view, hiring Martin was a mistake, and the money they gave him should have been given to the now Norwich City manager.

Footage emerged recently of Clement celebrating with the Norwich fans as he has done an exceptional job at Carrow Road.

The Belgian took over a side in mid-November that were 23rd in the EFL Championship and has transformed their fortunes.

They now sit in ninth place, aiming for a play-off spot, with him guiding them to 15 league wins in 26 matches.

Looking at his record, McManus took to X to write: “Right manager at the wrong time for Rangers this guy.

“If Rangers had the new ownership in place & given him the dough they gave Martin (instead of cutting the wage bill) I’d think Rangers be well clear this season.

Do McManus’ claims have any merit?

Clement spent around £18m at Rangers, but the results were underwhelming and he deserved the sack.

While the structure was not as good as it currently is, the Belgian still showed a lack of tactical nous, which eventually cost him his job.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst did better with fewer resources and guided the team to the Europa League final.

Clement had an abysmal record against Celtic, winning just once in nine games, and that was the main talking point about his tenure.

No Rangers fan will look back at his time at Ibrox and think that he could have done a better job than Danny Rohl is currently doing.
