Rangers keeper Jon McLaughlin could be set for his Old Firm debut as doubts linger over the fitness of Ibrox stopper Allan McGregor.
According to the Daily Record, McGregor is a doubt for the Scottish Premiership tie in what would represent a major blow for Steven Gerrard’s side.
But should the legendary keeper miss out on the first match against Celtic this season, then Rangers fans can be assured by the safe hands of McLaughlin.
Signed after his contract expired with Sunderland in the summer, the 33-year-old goalkeeper has been amongst the biggest signing surprises of the season.
After an early-season injury to McGregor, McLaughlin made the gloves his own as he showed great concentration and command to help Rangers to seven straight Scottish Premiership clean sheets.
McGregor won the number one spot back after a stellar performance against Willem II in the Europa League qualifiers, and if he’s fit then he will most likely be put in for the Celtic game.
But Rangers have filled a considerable void in signing McLaughlin and he has shown that he is willing to come in and not just provide cover but try stake his own claim for a place.
Whilst not having the number one keeper as an option is obviously a blow, it provides Scotland international McLaughlin with a huge opportunity to impress between the sticks.
