High profile summer Rangers target Daniel Johnson has reportedly been offered a “significant” new contract by Preston North End.

The Ibrox side were said to have launched a £1.5m bid to land the player [Lancashire Evening Post] with Preston making it clear this wouldn’t be enough for them to sell.

The Lancashire club released a stinging statement warning the Gers and any other suitors off the likes of Johnson or Preston teammate Ben Davies [Preston].

This was despite Johnson having only one year left on his current deal with Alex Neil’s side suggesting letting him go for a cut-price fee would do more harm than good.

Rangers instead opted for a deadline day loan-to-buy deal for South African midfielder Bongani Zungu with the club’s fans impressed by his first 45 minutes in a Rangers shirt.

But anyone thinking Rangers could relaunch a bid for Jamaican playmaker Daniel Johnson when he is free to discuss terms in January will be intrigued by this latest news.

According to the Lancashire Evening Post, Preston North End have offered “significant” contracts to four key first-teamers who have deals running out in the summer.

Amongst them includes Johnson, who was a £50,000 signing from Aston Villa in 2015 who has now racked up 226 appearances for North End, scoring 45 goals and making 26 assists.

But with Rangers linked with two different midfielders in the press in recent weeks, could the Gers have switched attentions from Johnson to plan for the future at Ibrox?
