Steven Gerrard stands by Graham Dorrans after operation news

Graham Dorrans’ injury hell has been a key feature of his time at Ibrox so far.

The former West Brom man arrived in Glasgow at the start of last season and offered so much promise. Yet, serious injuries to both his ankle and his knee have plagued his time at Rangers so far.

The latest blow that Dorrans suffered was revealed just two days ago. Steven Gerrard confirmed his midfielder had a serious knee issue that would force him to go for yet another operation. This was a bitter blow considering Dorrans had already just returned from an ankle knock picked up last season.

With so many injury problems, you could forgive those who would want to rip up Dorrans’ contract and get him off the wage bill. Gerrard, however, sees things very differently, and won’t be giving up on his midfield asset according to the Scottish Sun.

“He has had an operation on his knee and he will be missing until after Christmas, which is disappointing for him and for us. We won’t give up on him, we will give him the support.

“He has had a frustrating few months but I think that has been down to desperation and wanting to play and be part of this, so you give him credit for that in a way.

“Sometimes, as I have experienced myself, the only way is to go under the knife and try and get it sorted that way so we hope he is going to get it fixed.”

Big boost for Dorrans

Dorrans has to see this as a big boost despite his latest blow. With so much competition in the midfield, it would be easy for Gerrard to look to move him on.

Many will say that Rangers couldn’t get rid of him because nobody would take him. That’s nonsense, however, as Dorrans still has terrific pedigree that teams would be looking to take a gamble on.

It’s clear that Gerrard likes Dorrans. The manager had been trying to integrate him back into first-team affairs before his injury knock. Appearances against Villarreal, St Johntone, and Ayr United provided some hope.

Now, however, he’s going to be out until after the Winter break. Whether he can fight his way back into the side is one thing, but it’s a huge boost for him that Gerrard is willing to give him the time.
