Steven Gerrard: Rangers boss reaffirms commitment after exit links

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has once again reiterated his commitment to Ibrox amid what feels like constant speculation regarding his future.

The former Liverpool captain has revolutionised the club’s fortunes on and off the pitch with the Gers firm favourites to go on and secure more glory this season.

This summer alone the Ibrox gaffer has been linked with a trio of Premier League clubs, Gerrard getting mentioned alongside Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and even Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton.

Whilst the Ibrox gaffer has previously claimed those links were “never” a possibility, it’s regarding those links in general which the Gers boss was responding this week.

“I can’t control any media speculation about my position,” said Gerrard told ESPN.

“I don’t welcome it, I don’t add to it. All I do is focus on the job I have here and I’m very flattered and grateful for the position.

“I’m very happy here, I’ve said it on numerous occasions, it’s a huge club, I’m settled, I’m happy and I can continue to develop and keep trying to push this team forward.”

Gerrard was also speaking about the club’s Champions League push this season after early success with the club on the European stage.

The Ibrox gaffer has reiterated that old mantra of one game at a time as he diverts the club’s focus onto the clash with Malmo.

“The Champions League is obviously a level up from the Europa League, so we have to be ready for that,” said Gerrard.

“It’s going to be a tough challenge to get into that final round of qualifying, but for me, with experience you always worry about what is front of you, so the focus is very much on trying to overcome Malmo.

“It’s been a case of us trying to grow as a group from a European point of view.

“Obviously, there was a major setback here before I joined the club in terms of qualification but the club needs Europe financially and the fans also expect the team to deliver in Europe.

“We’ve had three really exciting journeys in Europe over the last three seasons, twice reaching the Europa League last 16, but it’s all about raising the bar and trying to go that one or two steps further.”

Whilst the Ibrox support will be buzzing to see their team back in action on the Champions League stage, there is some disappointment regarding current restrictions on the away leg.
