Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has suggested that Aston Villa would be a “great move” for ex-teammate and Rangers boss Steven Gerrard after the Premier League club sacked Dean Smith.

Smith, who had overseen Aston Villa since 2018, was sacked with the club sits just two points off the Premier League relegation zone.

With Gerrard seemingly linked with every job that becomes available in the Premier League, then it won’t come as a shock to Rangers supporters.

“I think Aston Villa as a club would be a great move for Steven Gerrard. But the situation he finds himself in right now is that he took the title away from Celtic last season, and he’s in a great position to win it again” Carragher explains [Sky Sports].

Whilst constant questions are asked about Gerrard’s future, many can’t help from think that the only club he would move to after Rangers, is Liverpool.

Realistically, he isn’t going to gain constant Champions League football at Aston Villa. With the chance to automatically qualify for next season’s competition by winning the title, Gerrard surely wants to prove that Rangers can compete at the highest level.

“But, in a perfect world, I think Steven Gerrard wants to come away from Rangers with another couple of trophies” Carragher states.

With the squad of players at his disposal and coming off the back of an unbeaten season, there is plenty of incentive for Gerrard to remain at the club, for as long as his heart is content.

Carragher finishes off by saying “it doesn’t surprise me if Steven Gerrard is favourite, he’s done a great job at Rangers”.

It is great to see Gerrard receive the plaudits he deserves, but until the time comes, he is the Rangers manager and still has unfinished business with us.

Meanwhile, a Rangers loanee scored at the weekend, but it wasn’t enough for his side.
