During his interview with RangersTV after Sunday’s win over Derby County, Steven Gerrard made an intriguing comment.
When bigging up the magnitude of his side’s achievement in both outplaying and defeating a team who came within a whisker of promotion to the Premier League last season, he passed comment on a former Gers player.
“They [Derby] have a coaching staff which have won leagues in Holland and they have quality throughout the team,” Gerrard told RangersTV. “[Martyn] Waghorn is worth £9million and their goalkeeper is a top-level goalkeeper – they have quality throughout the team and they have quality that was coming off the bench.”

By extension, it seems the manager thinks the Gers made a glaring transfer error back in 2017.
Waghorn was in Glasgow for two years before the club sold him to Ipswich for an estimated £990k [Transfermarkt].
Now, just two years later, it seems the current Rangers boss believes the 29-year-old is worth close to nine times what the club got for him.
That seems a touch far-fetched. Having said that, when Waghorn moved on from Ipswich to Derby after just a single season, he cost the Rams a cool £5.04 million [Transfermarkt]. He then particularly impressed in cup competitions under Frank Lampard and even notched a goal against Aston Villa in the playoff final.
Regardless of his current valuation, though, he was unable to make his presence felt upon his return to Ibrox over the weekend. He left goalless and on the losing side following Nikola Katic’s late winner.
