Steven Gerrard said there “wasn’t a prouder man in the building” as Rangers fans generated a raucous atmosphere after dumping Legia and earning a place in the Europa League.

European football continues to toss up special nights at Ibrox, and they don’t come as intense, as loud or as batshit crazy as Thursday night. It was delirium from the moment Morelos hit the net.

But these comments reveal so much about Gerrard’s role at Ibrox. And whilst he’s doing everything not to let us down – we have to do the same for him.

“You saw the place at the end and there wasn’t a prouder man in the building than me,” said Gerrard, as quoted by the Scotsman.

“One of the reasons I took the job was the support. From the outside, I could see the pain and disappointment. I wanted to come in and help.

“It’s moments like tonight that make me feel so proud and make it feel worthwhile. I’m glad I signed up to it.

“I wanted nights like this from a personal point of view. But to see my players celebrating with the 47,000 fans at the end, it was an emotional time. I was so proud to be the manager of this club out there.”

That’s Steven Gerrard, talking up Rangers, talking up the fans and announcing just how proud he is to be Rangers boss.

All of this despite having to wade through questions at press conferences about what school he went to and sectarian singing in the stands.

Much like it does to Rangers, sectarian singing damages the brand of Steven Gerrard – one of the biggest in world football. Through stadium closures, it also impairs his ability to properly do his job.

He’s never been shy to profess his fondness of Rangers [Guardian], and you can’t help but feel we’re letting the Liverpool legend down by allowing it to happen.

Steven Gerrard is building a side which will make us proud. Let’s ensure we keep doing the same for him from the stands.
