Steven Gerrard spoke positively about Rangers chances in tomorrow’s game with Villarreal, but he was also honest about the bigger picture.
Without sounding negative, Rangers might not have to win this game. We should believe than we can, and look to, but above all else, one statement summed up what we need from tomorrow’s match.
After Gerrard said: “Come the final whistle, it is critical we don’t lose the game.”
Why? Because even if we stumble to a draw tomorrow, we’re still in the competition come matchday six. Defeat is not an option. That’s been made very clear.
But make no mistake, the Gaffer was right about another thing. We are certainly capable if we “bring our A game” tomorrow.
Gerrard realistic and respectful of Villarreal challenge
Whilst bumming up our chances, Gerrard was honest about the challenge in front of us. If Rangers win tomorrow it is a huge result for the club. Villarreal have much more money and pose a real threat to our Euro hopes even if they’re underperforming.
“They certainly carry a threat and they have fantastic individual players,” said Gerrard. “We have huge respect for them individually and collectively.”
“We believe they are in a false position in the league, so we know they come with a big threat all over the pitch and that is a threat we have to be ready for.”
Tomorrow night, Rangers will go toe-to-toe with the Spaniards in a sold out Ibrox.
It’s all set to be a special night in the south of Glasgow.
